As the world continues to innovate and integrate artificial intelligence (AI) technology into society, concerns surrounding its ethical implementation have arisen. At the recently held Group of 20 (G20) summit, global leaders engaged in discussions about how to utilize AI for economic development while promoting human rights and protecting society’s best interests.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who hosted the summit, suggested the creation of a “human-centric” framework for AI governance, highlighting the importance of putting individuals and society at the forefront of technological innovation. Others, such as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, echoed his concerns and advocated for a regulatory body similar to the intergovernmental panel on climate change.

Leaders also noted the need to address ethical dimensions surrounding the technology’s expansion. Finance Minister Christian Lindner demonstrated the bloc’s interest in charting a direction by pledging to address AI ethics through common rules, affirming that the process of regulation had already begun.

In their final communique, G20 leaders committed to responsible AI development, emphasizing the need to protect rights, privacy, transparency, and data while acknowledging the risks. They also agreed to adopt a pro-innovation regulatory and governance approach that maximizes AI benefits while taking into consideration its associated challenges.

This announcement followed the G7 advanced economies’ recognition of the need for governance during their previous meeting in Japan. They launched the “Hiroshima Process” to discuss AI-related issues. Expected to last until the end of the year, the process includes cabinet-level discussions.

Looking towards Italy’s G7 presidency in 2024, AI is expected to be a significant topic of discussion. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Prime Minister Modi discussed the importance of coordination in addressing AI-related challenges at the G20 summit.

As AI technology continues to transform our society, it is crucial to establish global oversight and promote ethical considerations while fostering collaboration to ensure AI is harnessed responsibly and ethically. The world is looking towards global leaders to lead the way in striking the right balance to ensure that AI development serves the greater good.
